With holiday shopping in full swing, the madness of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, who knows what Sunday and Cyber Monday, this craziness has everyone in a frenzy. People getting trampled, pepper sprayed and even shot over finding the next best deal has me questioning what is going on in this crazy world of ours. Yes, the Holidays are a time of giving. Most of us have kids that have a list long enough to reach the North Pole … and back. But this year, lets do something a little different. Instead of spending most of your time, energy and frustration in the big box stores why not make something yourself or support your local artists, crafters and small businesses? Even a little bit will go a long way for those who are passionate about their business, and for most it is a way to support their own families.

This year I made gifts for my girlfriends, instead of buying them something from the mall. See jars above. Oh! But I cant tell you whats in them for Ill ruin my surprise! Sure, it was messy. And sticky. But it sure was fun! I know it can be challenging, but Im trying to keep my gift giving simple this year and include wares, services and goods from local businesses and people only. And I hope you do too. Ive included a list of some of my favorite local stores, and women who are in business. And the best part is, you can do much of your shopping from the comfort of your couch. How fabulous is that? If you know any local artists or stores that you think would be worth including, feel free to leave a comment and Id be happy to include them here. Happy shopping!

Yoga Shelter – Yoga makes a great gift for anyone! And this year, I snagged 24 visits for $24 for a family member who I know will just love it. Ive been practicing my Yoga there for about 2 years now, and they are top notch.

The Henry Ford & Greenfield Village – One thing I ask for year after year and never goes out of style. Take the kids, take the family. Warm or cold, a great place to visit and in our own back yard!

Scentsy – Now, cmon. My house didnt get smelling that good by accident. I love their products and their warmers look beautiful in any room. My favorite scent right now if Festival of Trees. Its as if I have turned my living room into a live Christmas Tree farm. And I love it. Feel free to contact Aimee or Tracy, both local if you are looking to stock up this season!

Door to Door Organics – local, fresh fruits and vegetables delivered directly to your doorstep? Yes, please! Ive been using DTD Organics for the past 6 months or so and absolutely love their service. They shop local produce, pack it up and deliver it right to your door with a friendly smile. Literally! Their site is also a great resource for recipes and making switches to your weekly delivery if you need to. In fact, I love it so much that some lucky person in my family will also get a years worth for the holidays. I love sharing things that I love!

Bella Mia – Need I say more? Youve seen their shoots here on my page and their holiday lines are to die for. I dont think Ill ever shop for myself in a store in the mall again. Besides, the girls that work there and the owner, Arlette are adorable and will help you look your very best for the holidays! With two stores located in Downtown Plymouth, its makes for a perfect afternoon of shopping and lunch with friends.

Lia Sophia – I am one of those girls that has more jewelry than I have time to wear it. But I absolutely love all of my pieces from Lia Sophia. And the best part? My consultant, Milissa is the very best! Not only is she an amazing host, but she has an incredible story about how Lia Sophia has changed her life for herself and her family of four. Definitely worth supporting!

Detroit Tigers– Did you know that you can buy tickets all year long? Get a jump start and makes a great stocking stuffer. You can also visit the merchandise store at the stadium and who wouldnt love a Verlander Jersey under the Christmas tree? I know I would! And for the little Tigers Fans in your family, they’re going to be opening Kids Club for the 2012 season soon. What a great gift!

Creative Memories – for all you digital scrappers out there, my client and friend Shauna is a consultant and they sell a ton of really great products for showing off your photos like calendars, cards, and albums just to name a few.

Jewel Kade & Thirty One – I have yet to attend one of Kims Jewel Kade shows, but know that Kim is a woman after my own heart. She chases her dreams and chases them hard. And now shes putting all of her tenacity to work and supporting her family along the way. I met Debbie, a consultant for Thirty One through Kim and also admire her strength to do what it takes to be a strong mother and support her family by promoting a product that she really stands behind. Debbie always has a positive attitude and has helped me stay strong when I didnt think I had the strength to do it. Thank you both!!

And being 6 and a half months pregnant means that I love food as much as I love jewelry, haha. So here is a quick list of some of my favorite, local places to eat and gift certificates always make people happy.

Big Bear Lodge– I love the cozy ski lodge feel and their food is fabulous. Located in Brownstown, its a great place to have a cozy dinner or a night out with friends and family.

I’ll be adding more to the list. But for now … its lunch time. And yes, heading out to Big Bear Lodge. Deeelish!

And lastly … photographers. And I can honestly say that there are so many great family, portrait and wedding photographers out there and living in your local communities. Support them if you can. Trust me when I say how hard they work, often putting other peoples families in front of their own every weekend especially around the holidays. You know who they are, you may even follow them through my posts, on Facebook or on their own blogs. Most of them offer Gift Certificates or Holiday sessions with some really great products to give as gifts for Christmas, Hanukkah and beyond. And yes, Mishelle Lamarand Photography also offers Gift Certificates in any amount to be used towards prints, products and services. They are all worth supporting, as I am also proud to call them my friends.

Thank you so much Mishelle! What a great post!! I have to mention 4 Her Boutique in Downtown Wyandotte. My friend Jeanette owns the store and they have the CUTEST clothes and accessories. I am currently obsessed with all of her hats and winter wear! 🙂
