I spent many years working for one of the worlds largest merchandise retailers, Limited Brands. Victoria’s Secret is where I learned how to manage, grow and run a business. Those years were much of a blur, but I loved every minute of my time there as a Store Director. At one point, I was running Somerset which was the #2 volume store in the country second to only 5th Avenue in Manhattan. And the holiday were …. pure madness. I left retail in 2001 and ever since then have steered completely clear of all things associated with the holiday rush. Now don’t get me wrong, I love to shop at a pretty mall and sip on my $6 coffee from Starbucks just like the rest of the world but I will wait until the crowds dies down every single Christmas. Just can’t do it.
As much as everyone loves a good deal from the big box stores and giant retailers on Black Friday, it’s Small Business Saturday that really makes me happy. Not only because I’ve been a small business owner for the past 9+ years, but because it’s small business that keep my community thriving and give back whenever they can.
