I had a crazy idea in my head for the past few months. To get my kids under the sheets, giggling and playing and having a dance party. So yesterday, we brought it to life. We cranked some music, stripped the bed and threw open the shades. My plan was really to get some shots of Nash before he starts crawling away from me which will be any day now. But it was actually Jillian who stole the show. Here’s a peek at our bed party from yesterday.
And for photographers: I’m going to start adding quick notes to the bottom of my personal shoots with a few tips just for you. It seems I get a lot of e-mails and questions lately after shoots, so thought I’d share. Scroll to the bottom of this post for more info.
These images were shot in my Master Bedroom where there is plenty of light and West facing windows. I waited until later in the day to make sure that the light was pouring through from behind. Keep in mind that the white sheets acted as a natural reflector, too which worked out great. I shot these with my 35mm 1.4L and shot pretty much wide open, at f/1.6. My ISO was set at 640 and I overexposed 1/3 stop to get just the right amount of light. Metering was set to Partial because I wanted to make sure the sheets were exposed properly, too. I metered (and usually do) for their faces. When shooting Nash & Jillian individually, I shot in One Shot for my drive mode, but then switched to Ai Servo for the two of them together since there was more movement. For editing, I just kept it simple, and made sure my skin tones stayed nice and peachy against the cool white of the sheets.
