I’m so proud to share another feature this morning for my mentoring series, For the Love of Learning.  This time around I had the honor working with Amy Solomon of Photography by Amy.  Based in Woodhaven, Michigan Amy is a beautiful mom of three little ones and has her hands full with a thriving business. She primarily shoots portraits and specializes in seniors and children.

Here’s a few quick facts about Amy:

How long have you  been in business?  I’ve been in business for almost two years.
Do you have a website?  Yes, www.amysolomonphotography.com
Where are you located?  I’m located in Brownstown, MI
Canon or Nikon?  Favorite lens?  Nikon.  50mm, 1.4
Coffee or tea?  Coffee, but I’d take Diet Pepsi over both.
What inspires you?  My children are my biggest inspiration.  I want to capture all the little details of them growing up, changing and all their life experiences.  The poor things have had a camera in their face since they were born.
My favorite thing to take pictures of is ….  Seniors.  I just love working with this age group.  I feel like I can be as creative as I want with them and they’re very willing to try new things.  They’re so full of life, with their whole future and dreams ahead of them; they totally inspire me.
What’s the most exciting thing you have planned for 2013 (personal or business)  Oh, so many things!  We’re planning on moving in the near future (somewhere local) and I’m looking forward to more workspace to take my studio and business to the next level.  I’m also looking forward to narrowing the focus of my business to excel in the areas where I’m truly passionate.
When Amy & I met for the first time and began shooting together, I immediately got a sense of her enthusiasm and energy.  We shot together and talked about how to choose the best locations for our shoot, light and connecting with our clients.  We talked a lot about shooting and posing seniors, it’s definitely an age group that Amy’s passionate about.  I was jumping for joy when I saw the results of Amy’s next senior shoot just a few days later and the differences with her shooting and putting to use all that we talked about.  Here’s a quick before and after.  So beautiful.
After shooting, we headed back to her office and dug into her portfolio, website and brand.  We talked extensively about defining our client, pricing ourselves according to our market and how to define our brand to attract those types of clients.  We also talked about narrowing our focus instead of shooting everything that comes our way, and that it’s ok to say no to projects that don’t inspire us.  On our second day, we worked together on workflow and editing.  As a busy mom, it’s tough to make it all happen with a busy business and workflow is a critical part of that equation.

Amy, I’m so lucky to know you.  You are a such a beautiful and energetic person inside and out, and I love watching you grow!
