I knew when I started on this adventure of mentoring last year that it was going to be rewarding for me in many ways.  I always knew that I loved sharing my own experiences and bumps along the road with other photographers.  But what I didn’t realize then, and what I know now is that thorugh this I would come to meet some pretty extraordinary people.  Enter Kathy Davies.  I knew of her name, was familiar with her beautiful work and had even lost a wedding client or two to her.  It wasn’t until the spring of this year that I was finally able to meet her in person when I spoke at The Share Society in Ann Arbor.  I knew instantly that  I wanted to work with her.  We both seem to have that same “organized chaos” that drives us and keeps us on our toes.  I hinted to her that night that she should mentor with me, and was thrilled when my phone rang a few weeks later.

I love everything about Kathy.  She’s crazy talented, confident enough to take creative risks with her work and has a work ethic like it’s nobody’s business.  We spent 8 hours together for an all-day 1:1 mentoring session earlier this fall and we got down to the nitty gritty.  We shot for a few hours together, then dug deep into her business, work/life balance and refined her “perfect client” and ways to bring that type of client to her.  It was a jam packed day full of hard work, laughs and exploration.

Here’s a few facts about Kathy …

How long have you been in business?  I started my business almost 4 years ago. I had a full time job while I was learning, and growing for 2 years of it. After 2 years, I finally took the leap, which was the scariest and best thing I’ve ever done in my life.

Where can we see your work?  www.kathydaviesphotography.com. I also have a blog that will be updated once things slow down, it will be shown on my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kathy-Davies-Photography/208984660195 once it happens! I have instagram that my friends and clients get a view into my personal life as well. You can follow me at http://instagram.com/kathyedavies
Where are you located? I live in Royal Oak, but LOVE to travel. Up north weddings have my heart, I definitely want to start doing more there, as well as across the US.

Canon or Nikon?  Favorite lens? I have always been a Canon girl and love my 50mm.
Coffee or tea? Starbucks coffee all day every day. Caramel Macchiato’s are my fave.

What inspires you?  I would say nature inspires me. I love the smell, movement, and beauty of it. I love trees, camping, campfires, canoeing, beautiful light..and all things outdoors. Traveling also inspires me. Seeing new things, taking photos of different part of the world. It would be my dream to be a traveling photographer…never taking photos at the same place twice. And lastly, design and fashion…fashion photography is also something I’ve always wanted to do. My amazing clients… I could go on and on…

What’s your favorite thing or person to shoot?  My nephew, he is the most beautiful baby i’ve ever seen! I really love engagement photos, making them unique to that couple in some way. Seniors are also another favorite of mine. So naive and excited for what the future brings.
What does the remainder of 2013 and 2014 look like for you? Focusing more on travel and growing my business. I just booked a wedding in San Diego, and have an east coast wedding in the works, which I am SO excited for! I love seeing and experiencing new things! I’ll also be focusing on a new look for my branding and looking into designing albums.

Kathy … I adore your sweet nature,  and I’m so happy that we had a chance to finally work together.  I loved every minute of it and can’t wait to hear about all of your many adventures!  Stay true to yourself, keep shooting what you love.  And lastly, if you need someone to carry your bags for your California weddings, I’m your girl xoxox
